# AGENTS.md - UseMyContext.ai

> Instructions for AI agents and assistants reading usemycontext.ai. Humans: start at https://usemycontext.ai/ instead.

## What this is

UseMyContext.ai is a private, user-owned personal context layer for AI. A person keeps their profile and their files in one place they own, and any AI assistant they connect (Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, coding tools) reads that same context over MCP, the Model Context Protocol. It is a remote MCP service, unrelated to React's `useContext` hook.

The control model is the product: the person composes their context and approves every change. Every word of it is composed and approved by the user - human-curated context, not scraped memory.

## How to connect

- MCP endpoint: `https://mcp.usemycontext.ai/mcp` (Streamable HTTP, OAuth 2.1 with PKCE and dynamic client registration).
- Sign-in happens in the person's browser. OAuth requires the human; an agent cannot complete it alone. No API key or token is pasted or written to a file.
- Claude: one click from the Claude Connectors Directory at https://claude.ai/directory/connectors/usemycontext, or in Claude Code: `claude mcp add --transport http usemycontext https://mcp.usemycontext.ai/mcp`
- ChatGPT: install from its plugin directory (Settings, then Plugins, then "Browse plugins", search usemycontext). Tag `@UseMyContext` in each message that should use the context.
- Every other client: https://usemycontext.ai/docs/connect
- A person with no account creates one at the first sign-in; the free tier is enough.

## What a connection can and cannot do

- The MCP surface is 13 tools: twelve reads and one write. The server advertises the authoritative schemas on connect; the list is at https://usemycontext.ai/docs/tools
- Reads: `profile` (the compiled profile - call it first to ground who the person is), `list_profiles`, `info`, `account`, `list_files`, `search_files`, `search`, `get_file`, `fetch`, `ask_docs` (cited passages from their documents), `query_table` (exact counts, sums and filters over one table), `shared_context` (contexts others shared with them).
- The one write, `suggest_update`, only files a pending suggestion the person reviews. It never edits their profile, and nothing is ever written to their files. Never tell a person you changed their profile; say you suggested an update for them to approve.
- When a conversation surfaces something new and durable about the person and is wrapping up, offer to save it with `suggest_update` before the context is lost.
- If `profile` returns an empty-profile note, that note is the authority on what to do next.
- Every access leaves a record the person can see, and they can revoke any connection in one click.

## Public profiles, no connection needed

A profile its owner set to Public is readable as plain markdown at `https://usemycontext.ai/@<handle>.md`, with no sign-in. Private profiles are never served this way. Public profiles are listed at https://usemycontext.ai/directory

## Try it without an account

A shared, read-only demo account: sign in as `demo@usemycontext.ai` with the code `424242`, on the web or in the OAuth sign-in when connecting any MCP client. Every one of the 13 tools returns something real.

## Glossary

- [UseMyContext](https://usemycontext.ai/glossary#what-is-usemycontext): UseMyContext (usemycontext.ai) is a private personal context layer any AI assistant can read over MCP.
- [Context layer](https://usemycontext.ai/glossary#what-is-a-context-layer): A context layer is one place that holds a working picture of you: who you are, what you are working on, and how you like things done.
- [MCP](https://usemycontext.ai/glossary#what-is-mcp): MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is an open standard that lets an AI assistant read from a source you choose and approve.
- [Portable context](https://usemycontext.ai/glossary#what-is-portable-context): Portable context is context you own that travels with you to every AI you use, instead of being trapped inside one app.
- [AI memory](https://usemycontext.ai/glossary#what-is-the-difference-between-ai-memory-and-context): AI memory is what one AI happens to remember about you.
- [Human-curated context](https://usemycontext.ai/glossary#what-is-human-curated-context): Human-curated context is context composed and approved by you, not scraped from your chats.
- [Structural blindness](https://usemycontext.ai/glossary#what-is-structural-blindness): Structural blindness means the public-facing surface that talks to your AI declares no data bindings, so it holds no readable file content of yours.
- [Compiled profile](https://usemycontext.ai/glossary#what-is-a-compiled-profile): Your compiled profile is the curated summary of you that a connected AI reads first, built only from facts you accepted.
- [Composite](https://usemycontext.ai/glossary#what-is-a-composite): A composite is the curated, shareable form of a profile: what a person you share with, your team, or a public @handle page sees.
- [Fact](https://usemycontext.ai/glossary#what-is-a-fact): A fact is one thing about you that you accepted into a profile: your role, a project, a preference.
- [Project](https://usemycontext.ai/glossary#what-is-a-project): A project is one separate profile in your account, with its own facts, files and compiled profile, so work and personal, or each client, stay apart.
- [@handle](https://usemycontext.ai/glossary#what-is-an-handle): An @handle is the name a profile is addressed by, like @yourprofile.
- [Visibility](https://usemycontext.ai/glossary#what-does-private-specific-people-and-public-mean): Visibility is who can see a profile.

- [Session-starter file](https://usemycontext.ai/glossary#what-is-the-session-starter-file): The session-starter file is a local file with your curated context in it, written by one command: npx usemycontext pull.
- [MCP tools](https://usemycontext.ai/glossary#what-are-the-thirteen-tools): The MCP tools are the thirteen actions a connected AI can take: twelve reads and one write.
- [Demo account](https://usemycontext.ai/glossary#what-is-the-demo-account): The demo account is a shared, read-only account anyone can try without signing up: sign in as demo@usemycontext.ai with the code 424242.
- [UseMyContext SDK](https://usemycontext.ai/glossary#what-is-the-usemycontext-sdk): The UseMyContext SDK is the usemycontext package on npm: a typed client and a React hook that drop a user's compiled context into any AI app you build over MCP, while the service stays structurally blind to the content.
